International organization of Parliaments established in 1889 that works in close collaboration with the United Nations. It is the focal point for world-wide parliamentary dialogue and works for peace and co-operation among peoples and for the firm establishment of representative democracies. Its headquarters have been in Geneva since 1921.

The Statues of the Union were adopted in 1976 and revised in October 1983, April 2003 and October 2013. It counts with 164 Members and 10 associated members.

The main Organs are: the Assembly, the Governing Council and the Executive Committee.

Colombia in IPU

 

Members of the Colombian Congress participate regularly in the different meetings of the Union. Senator Juan Manuel Galán is nowadays in charge and until March, 2015, of the Vice-Presidency of the Third Permanent Commission of Democracy and Human Rights. He also holds the Vice-Presidency of GRULAC from October 2014, and for a period of a year. This election happened in the context of the previous General Assembly of the Union (131) that took place in Geneva from the 12th to the 16th of October, 2014.

Likewise, Colombia participates through the Geopolitical Group of Latin America and the Caribbean.
