International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants – UPOV
Intergovernmental organization created by the International Convention for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants of 1961 (revised in 1972, 1978 and 1991). It has a Secretary General, who is the Director General of WIPO.
Its mission is to provide and promote an effective system of plant variety protection, with the aim of encouraging the development of new varieties of plants, for the benefit of society.
Colombia in UPOV
Colombia became a member of the Union since the 13th of September, 1996, having adopted the Act of 1978.
Colombia participates in UPOV’s meetings (Administrative and Judicial Committee, the Consultive Committee and the Council) via its focal point, the Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario - ICA, entity affiliated to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. It also participates in the Administrative and Legal Committee, the Consultative Committee and the Council.
